Parton showers put to rights
Monte Carlo (MC) generators have been used extensively for the past decades in order to simulate collisions at particle colliders, like the LHC. These tools are often misconstrued as a haphazard medley of ingredients. Their core component, the parton shower, generates the extra partonic radiation from the high energies of the hard scattering down to the hadronisation scale. For a long time, it was unclear what accuracy, if any, was associated with this part of the simulation: in this talk I will recap how the state-of-the-art MC generators function, focusing on their parton-shower component. I will present recent breakthroughs in the development of more precise showers, and the ways we test these tools rigorously.
