Tracing dark matter: from the Milky Way to the lab

The dark matter distribution in the Solar neighborhood is an important input for the analysis and interpretation of data from dark matter direct detection experiments. High resolution cosmological simulations of galaxy formation can provide crucial information on the properties of the dark matter halo, and can significantly improve our understanding of the Galactic dark matter distribution. I will present the local dark matter distribution of Milky Way-like galaxies extracted from state-of-the-art cosmological simulations, and discuss their implications for direct dark matter searches. I will also discuss how the dark matter component of massive satellites such as the Large Magellanic Cloud can alter the results.
