Unconventional Taste: Flavor via Unexpected Origins

The origin of flavor is one of the biggest puzzles of the Standard Model. In this talk, I discuss how supersymmetry, a solution to the superficially unrelated hierarchy problem, can be broken in such a way that a controlled yet nontrivial flavor structure arises. Introducing gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking, and a refinement thereof — flavored gauge mediation — I will detail a model in which supersymmetry breaking and the appearance of flavor structure can occur via the same mechanism. I will then demonstrate a few possible scenarios and their phenomenology within this framework.
